Preterm Nutrition

Providing the most vulnerable consumers with ingredients inspired by the most valuable source of nutrition - breast milk - to support their unique needs.

Every year

15 Million

infants are born premature

Every

40 seconds

a preterm infant dies

Preterm birth was the leading cause in the reduction of healthy years of human life in the 1990s, and still is TODAY.

What is

Preterm birth?

During 40 weeks of pregnancy, a fetus goes through various stages of development.

Facial expressions
Immune system
Gut & microbiome development
Respiratory maturation
Neurodevelopment & cognitive functions

Neurodevelopment & cognitive functions

During the third trimester of gestation, the brain undergoes a fourfold increase in size, accompanied by a significant expansion in surface area. This period is crucial for the development of essential brain functions, including cognitive abilities and information processing, as well as for the formation of neural connections within the brain.

Respiratory maturation

Major growth and maturation of the respiratory system happens during the third trimester of pregnancy. More early lung cells develop and larger amounts of essential lung coating liquid are produced. A prematurely born baby can only breathe independently after the 28th week of pregnancy.

Gut & microbiome development

In the third trimester of pregnancy, the gastrointestinal (GI) tract begins preparing for digestion, and the fetus starts swallowing amniotic fluid, a critical step in gut maturation. The human gut microbiome, which has a significant influence on overall health, begins developing during the prenatal period and continues to evolve in the early years of life.

Immune system

The presence of more mature and diverse immune cells increases in later stages of pregnancy. A significant advancement in the immune system’s ability to respond to pathogens is happening during this time.

Facial expressions

In the second half of pregnancy, the fetus starts opening and closing its eyes. Later, in the last timester, facial expressions like pouting and smiling can be observed.

Preterm birth

occurs birth the 37th week of pregnancy, before the infant is fully developed.

occurs before the 37th week of pregnancy.

Neurodevelopment & cognitive functions

Already early in pregnancy, the fetus starts to move in a random and spontaneous way.
Goal-directed movements that require coordinations develop later in pregnancy.

Respiratory maturation

Especially in the third pregnancy trimester, Major growth and maturation of the respiratory system happens. More early lung cells develop, and larger amounts of essential lung coating liquid are produced. Only after the 28th week of pregnancy, a prematurely born baby could breathe independently.

Nutrition is key

Adequate nutrition is essential to support a preterm infant’s growth at the same rate as a fetus and ensure crucial development.

Breastmilk is the best.

Breastmilk is perfectly tailored for the needs of a neonate. A preterm infants grows and develops 3-4 times faster than a term infant.

Even if preterm infants are fortunate enough to receive breastmilk, it requires further fortification to meet their nutritional needs for this faster growth.
